Considerations for I-610 in Louisiana travel

Use I-610 as an access route when you need to stage near New Orleans or leave I-10 for a stop. Check your HOS and ELD before entering the city. Parking gets harder after dark, so plan ahead and book a spot before your available hours run short. Choose hourly or daily parking for a quick break, or multi-day and monthly parking for a longer stay.

  • Know the route. I-610 is a short I-10 loop that cuts across New Orleans and connects with I-10 at both ends. It crosses US 90 and carries commercial traffic, so expect truck movement. The Louisiana segment is about 5 miles.
  • At the west end, I-610 meets I-10 near West End Boulevard and Canal Boulevard by the Pontchartrain Expressway. West End leads toward City Park. West End and Pontchartrain Boulevards serve Lakeview and Lakeshore West.
  • Use extra care with local access. Canal Boulevard has a split-diamond interchange in the Lakeview street grid. Elysian Fields Avenue has a diamond interchange. St. Bernard Street has a split-diamond interchange near Dillard University, the Fair Grounds Race Course, Gentilly, and Spanish Fort.
  • The Louisiana route passes City Park, Lakeview, and Gentilly before rising onto a six-lane viaduct through the 7th Ward. Check your route and turning needs before leaving the interstate, especially with a long trailer or oversized load.
  • West End Boulevard provides access to City Park, while I-610 also serves Dillard University and the University of New Orleans. Watch for city traffic, pedestrians, and changing access near these areas.
  • I-610 continues across Texas and Louisiana for about 43 miles, but only about 5 miles are in Louisiana. Verify current restrictions, closures, and commercial guidance with the Louisiana state DOT before a detour.
